The Humming-Bird Tree by Ian McDonald6/12/2023 I'm not poor and that means a lot to many of the people around me. I kept seeing myself over the years and how my perception of people have changed because of my social status. In Alan's case, the outside influences were his parents and their adult opinions on the people of colour (in this case Indians) in the story. The change in their relationship reflects not only the accepted racism at the time, it also depicts how one's feelings for others can change over time both with or without outside influences. This story centres around a white boy, Allan, and his relationships with his yard boy, Kaiser, and his sister, Jailin. Other than the fact that high school literature taught me nothing! I think this is a book that I will never get rid of and may read a few times over in my lifetime. Upon writing this review this is what I think. Well shit! Upon closing the book that's all I thought.

While I acknowledge that women and men are different, I always find myself trying to help women in my life understand how men think or process things. So, what does acting like a lady think like a man mean today? However, there are merits as to why you would ask your daughter, girlfriend or sister to try and think like a man. This is simply because women think differently from men. To be asked to act like a lady and think like a man is a big ask. 1.9 Further reading Act like a lady think like a manĪct like a lady think like a man. The hacienda isabel canas6/11/2023 The sanctuary and freedom that Beatriz thinks she has found in Hacienda San Isidro is all a facade for a dark and violent past that has filled the home.Ĭañas wisely chooses to unpack this story through dual narration from Beatriz and a priest that befriends her, Andres. THE HACIENDA, Isabel Cañas’ debut novel, is the story of one woman trapped in the house of her nightmares. Far from a refuge, San Isidro may be Beatriz’s doom. When Rodolfo returns to work in the capital, visions and voices invade Beatriz’s sleep. But Hacienda San Isidro is not the sanctuary she imagined. The Farmer and the Clown by Marla Frazee6/10/2023 The pencil and gouache landscapes draw on soft, smoky grays and yellows and sometimes grayish yellows, giving the wide-open plains a period, possibly Depression-era feel that adds atmosphere and enhances the importance of the warmth between the two protagonists. Frazee imbues her simple story with the immediacy and pathos of a short silent film, and both the clown kid and the old farmer are dramatic body actors: the kid's overemoting and excitedly flapping limbs make him the fizzy center of most spreads, and his disconsolate drooping is as sad as a puppy whimper. Horn Book, November/December 2014 STARRED REVIEW. Appearances can be deceiving in this superb wordless book from two-time Caldecott Honor recipient Frazee.Using only pictures, Frazee's book-both spare and astonishingly rich-offers a riveting narrative, characters to care deeply about, and an impressive range of emotion. Easy beauty chloe cooper jones6/10/2023 We sang in silly voices, Our lives are over, our lives are over, one more minute of freedom, thirty more seconds of happiness, ten, nine, eight, we sang the seconds, never thinking for any one of them that the test would come back positive. We danced in the kitchen, laughing, letting the timer run down. I peed on a stick and Andrew set a timer. My mother had objected to his choice of the word “inhospitable” and the doctor had said, OK, so how about “incompatible for growing a life”? The doctor explained that my disability rendered my body inhospitable. At seventeen, when I had my first boyfriend, my mother took me to have some tests run so that we could be certain. I believed it to be true and so it was definitively true. The brain takes the facts it is given and from them forms reality. People sometimes ask me, How could you not have known? But how could I have known? I’d been told my whole life I could not get pregnant. I blamed this on Andrew who kept bringing over Neapolitan ice cream bars, my favorite, and leaving them in my freezer. I threw up every day for the next three months, but also I was gaining weight. I’d never had a regular period, so skipping several months was more normal than not. Chronic pain often left me so exhausted that I got sick.
